which was a step forward in my understanding of this tricky little gizmo we
take pichas with.

Thanks John.  I think you made a good point in suggesting that the
second and third screws in from the lens mount are best left alone.  And
probably the roller screw too.  

Wouldn't it be fun to be let loose in a Leica workshop for a day?
The fella over the road completely disassembled his Canon EOS 750 a few
years back, on the dining room table.  Got it back together, no screws
left over, works just fine.  He's a diesel mechanic with the bus
company. I might give him my M6.  It'll come back chugging along well at
low speeds.
