Optimism of the spirit, pessimism of the intellect. Still, the book sort of puts a damper on the profligate, self-referential dissemination of meaningless, stupid, autobiographical and just plain bad photographs, doesn't it? Long ago, a saxophone player told a neighbor of mine, a trumpeter, that when he picked up his instrument he was unable to stop playing.
