Subject: [Leica] Filters for Summitar

Hey Gang: I posted a question a couple of weeks ago about what kind of
filters fit the 50:2 Summitar. I received several excellent replies. I
found yet another solution right under my nose, and I already have some of
the filters!

It turns out that the diameter of a series-VI filter is about .5mm smaller
than the Summitar. I took a series-VI retaining ring and lined it with a
piece of blacktape (named after the famous physician and journalist) It fit
great! Another ring and a filter and I was set. I cut my tape a little
short so maybe that is the secret to a good fit. The tape is trimmed flush
with the edge. Its very secure and I already have several filters and
rings. As mentioned the filters without rings also fit (a little
precariously) in the clip-on shade for the 60-70s Summicron.

Now I just need to find some new series-VI filters. Some of mine are
genuine Wratten and have started to separate. They are gelatin sandwitched
between pieces of glass.

I made an ersatz cap for the Summitar from a lid to a plastic juice bottle.
I trimmed the bottle cap threads down with a small hand-grinder. It fits ok
but is not pretty. The rubber 1.5-inch pipe cap mentioned in previous posts
is too big for the Summitar and I can't find a 1.25-inch one.
