This frumpy looking guy strolls up and we discuss cases and traveling. I notice his America's Cup logo shirt and after he mentioned heading soon for New Zealand, I asked if he had anything to do with the Cup. Well, it turned out to be San Diegan naval architect Doug Peterson. He designed the New Zealand boats that hijacked the Auld Mug. And he has designed Prada, the Italian entry that is so far undefeated. Most important, we discussed cameras. His favorite, despite taking some cheapy Canon to shoot telephoto from the supply boat, is his old M3. Of course, he also likes old gaff rigged wooden boats. We chatted for about 45 minutes, he wanting to discuss cameras (and picked my brain clean about shooting power boats, especially use of Gyro) and all I really wanted to talk about was boats. At any rate, the M3 is going to the AC in NZ. donal Donal Philby San Diego www.donalphilby.com
