Actually, I'm not much of a DIYer in any area.  I do what I do well, and get
paid well for it.  In return I pay others to do what they do well.  This
keeps the economy humming.  I am also under no illusions that I could, as a
hobbyist, do anything that requires skill development and maintenance nearly
as well as someone who does it 2000 hours a year.

I'm making one exception to this - a digital darkroom.  And if the system
proves out, I may switch to chromes and scan/print without needing the
proofing stage.  But I still get my comeuppance - I'll spend most of an hour
scanning a frame and tweaking it in PS, and then, bursting with pride, call
my wife down to have a look at it on the screen.  She glances at it, mumbles
"10 magenta, drop the contrast" and stomps back upstairs...
