Yes, that is the technique that I've used for quite a while and it works 
well.  You can make the midtone adjustments in Levels, but I've found that I 
have more control and flexibility using curves.

Of course all of this refers to global corrections.  I use a variety of 
selection techniques and, occasionally Replace Color for specific area 
corrections.
