Perhaps he'd like to take a look at the Jim Marshall site, where they talk about the fact that, while he often uses little equipment, Marshall finds a lens and body that feel right together and never again separates them... Anyone who has been around any number of shooters - certainly in pre-zoom days - would know that 4-6 cameras is par for the course...as you say, 21-35-50s on Ms, then perhaps 105, 180, 300 on Nikons (Sorry :-) )...
