The "i" means improved so it works with the latest Canon E-TTL feature (Evaluative TTL). If you get a 40MZ-2 cheap, buy it unless you need the wide range zoom head. A good camera store should be able to tell you the difference to a MZ-2, but looking at the Metz home page the only difference I could tell was that the 3 zooms to 105mm and out to 21mm with the flip up lens. The only difference I could tell in the 3i is of no consequence to R8 users. The 3i has red-eye reduction which does not work with the R8. The main features I really love about the 40MZ: bouncing the main light with the fill-in secondary light, and the ability to do TTL while the R8 is in A mode set to any aperture. I think the 40MZ-2 has both of those features. (Using the P mode on the R8 sets the lens to f/5.6 @1/250, and there are times I want more depth of focus in the image. BTW, the f/stop will be transmitted to the 40MZ even with a non-ROM lens. As far as I can tell, the only difference between ROM and non-ROM is that you have to set the zoom head manually to the right focal length. Since my non-ROM lens is a fixed focal length, the ROM seems a minor luxury. Bob Rose ================== I am thinking of purchasing a Metz 40MZ-2 with SCA 3501 adapter, but have a few questions for anyone knowledgeable. 1. What is the difference between a Metz 40MZ-2 and the newer MZ-3 or MZ-3i models? 2. Will a 40MZ-2 with SCA 3501 adapter take full advantage of the R8's TTL flash capabilities? 3. Is there any other unit to consider? I am on a budget and cannot afford to pay more than about $200. 4. Does anyone have an MZ40-2 or 3 they want to sell cheap? Thanks, Robert E.
