Codeword will be UNDYS.=20 One of the major issues is that Grant insists that Leica reopen its = plant in Midland, Canada. Leica has expressed concern over the fact as to whether Ted will be able = to break in so many pairs of underwear.=20 Preliminary tests conducted by Leica engineers resulted in some = scratched lenses. Failure rate is said to be as high as 90%. The = remaining 10% is said to improve light transmission of the 50mm = Noctilux, from f1 to a remarkable f0.999, which has optical experts = baffled.=20 One well-known dealer has reported that introduction may be delayed = until the millennium. Estimated price is said to be in the $100 price = range for a pair, in keeping with Leica=92s high price for special = edition models. Attempts to reach Ted Grant for comment were unsuccessful, but one = source close to Ted said of that Ted is trying to age the underwear in = SHARPO -- which may account for the improvement in light transmission.=20 SHARPO is another product brewed by this famed Canadian in his basement, = whose formula is closely guarded, and to which a small group of = photographers ascribe mystical properties (see Nov/Dec issue for more). A well-known Japanese firm had made an eight-figure offer that was = rejected by Grant.=20 Reception of the news in the photo community has been varied. One noted = wire photographer in Rochester commented " If Ted can get all that money = for a pair of stinking shorts, more power to him =85" Environmental groups in the US are outraged, citing health regulations. It=92s doubtful that Leica will ever market the product in the US, but = as can be expected, some photographers may manage to smuggle them into = the country through the Canadian border. SHARPO is a registered Trademark.
