I thought LUGers may be interested in the following from the August 1996 =
National Geographic:
=20
"Eleven years after she appeared on the June 1985 cover of Geographic, =
people still ask Steve McCurry about "the girl". "I've heard offers of =
adoption ... and marriage; somebody even has a tattoo of her face," says =
the photographer, who shot the portrait in a crowded Afghan war-refugee =
camp in Pakistan. Last year (this) massive banner - printed backwards =
- - was displayed in Madrid at an exhibition of Geographic photos. The =
face always attracts attention, Steve notes, "But I never found out her =
name. I have a friend in Pakistan who continues to look for her."
=20
A search of my NatGeo CD's revealed that Steve McCurry is credited in 18 =
of them (up to December 1996) and this particular image features on the =
cover of the CD set and also on the final image when signing off from =
the program. Obviously a very popular image with the editors.
