Dear Thib,
You are describing the neg that everyone hates. Underexposed, so there is
not adequate shadow detail, and because the exposure is so far down on the
foot of the density curve, the contrast is tight. Mostly you have to decide
what evil you want to live with, and work around it. I generally use a
contrasty paper and except the resulting grain and tonal rendition. The
thing to do, of course, is expose the film correctly in the first place, but
that isn't always possible.
