David,
I'm sitting here looking at two Varta batteries.  The 1.35V mercury is
called V 625 PX or PX 625.  The Alkaline 1.5V battery is called V 625U.
Of course the packaging is clearly marked as such.

If you are looking only at a battery, then the mercury battery should
have PX somewhere on it.

It is hard to find PX 625's in the U.S.  I bought mine in Halifax this
summer.
