Subject: Re: [Leica] Backorders

My experiences with B&H agree with Tom's and I am also a "frequent" buyer
in large and small quantities. I always ask if the item is in-stock and
they are always honest. At that time I can either choose to let them
backorder, knowing it will be charged to my card, or simply refrain from
ordering the item and call another dealer. The same is true of Adorama.
Those are the only two large NY discounters that I will deal with. All
the others--especially Cambridge--have perpetrated (or attempted to) some
kind of repulsive, unethical practise on me and will never get my
business. I have never purchased Leica equipment from the NY
discounters, for the reason already posted: their prices are the same as
dealers everywhere. Dealers such as Kuehl and Chatterton sell new,
non-used Leica without the US passport for usually $100-$200 under
standard US pricing and when I consider my track record of repair
incidence with Leica equipment, I would choose to risk going without the
passport, but it is by no means a clear-cut decision. Occasionally,
Tamarkin in NY offers Leica factory "demonstrator" equipment with one or
two year warranties, for substantial savings. These dealers, BTW, all
are just as knowledgeable and helpful and ethical as any local dealer.

Nigel
