So, one day I went into a shop to find out that she's an >automatic - which, in my understanding of photography, is some kind >of P&S derivate. You must have looked at the wrong camera, because the G2 is either aperture priority (when the shutter speed dial is set to AUTO, you determine exposure by the setting aperture ring on lens) or manual exposure. It is no different than any SLR in that respect. There is no completely automatic function. The G2 is a great camera, but it is very different from an M6. Aside from the fact that one has autofocus and an electronic rangefinder and the other is wholly mechanical, the much-maligned G2 is pretty much exactly what the M6E would be, gauging by the comments on the LUG. Speaking from experience, I feel that the G2 is a great camera, but like an M6 it is not the kind of camera that feels like the back of your hand the first time you use it. That's why they make point and shoots--so there's no challenge to the camera or any learning curve to speak of. These cameras' quirks are what make them so different and so great. They co-exist in my camera bag quite happily, I might say, and I've made great pictures with both of them.
