Probably told to someone by a camera/lens salesman.

Like a divorce lawyer advising a friend who was aguing with his girlfriend
that it was aa good time to get married......

I would never dream of using an eraser to clean any lens (even in the olden
days when I owned a store and sold cameras, and yes, I was a Leica dealer back
then.)
