Not entirely true. Older Vivitar 283s had a high voltage but current ones do not. Vivitar has a toll-free tech number in the U.S. at (800) 421-2381, where they'll describe how to tell the older and newer flashes apart. But the problem has been solved for a long enough time now that it's unlikely a 283 bought new is going to cause any camera any harm. Larry
