Harrison,

These little depth of field notches are used with the 50mm lens.  If the
viewfinder and rangefinder images are no farther apart than the upper
(wider) notch, then acceptable sharpness will be attained at f/16.  The
lower (narrower) notch is the indicator for f/5.6.
