With regard to Leica's practice of designing lenses to retain some residual
spherical aberration to soften out of focus images, please check out the
intro to Rogliatti's _Leica and Leicaflex Lenses_:  this is written by one
of the Leitz designers of the 1970's who discusses this in detail.  The
policy began with Berek and continued to the present:  Eric Welch has drawn
my attention to the talk recently given by the current director of Advanced
Lens Design at Leica, who has apparently convinced the Mavens of Solms to
abandon this standard for the R lenses though, I hope, NOT for the M opticks!
