I have had success every time using Stellar Phoenix to recover missing
images.

https://www.stellarinfo.com

This lost-images problem is caused by glitches in the file system
structure on the SD card, and the Stellar Phoenix app has always worked
for me to find and fix the problem. Their cost/licensing structure is
such that I end up buying a new copy every time, because I have not
needed it more often than once a year, but the purchase price is around
$50 and that has always seemed worth it to recover my lost images.

It is theoretically possible to use Apple's Disk Utility to do this, but
I've been afraid to try it.
