My sister is more or less exactly your age?she will turn 70 in October. In
the past couple of years, I have persuaded her to get online (I gave her a
laptop that was surplus to requirements) and this year she finally got a
smartphone as well. Some of the most online people I know are far older than
you.

To buy apps from the Apple app store you have to have an account yes, just
as you do to buy stuff from Amazon in the physical world. Nothing mysterious
about that.

YOU ARE NOT OLD.

Cheers,
Nathan
