This is the Drayden school, a one room school house built in 1890 for black
children. One teacher taught grades 1 through 7 and there were often 40
children trying to learn in this small building. It was in use until 1944.
That stuns because it means this building was in use as a school during my
lifetime! Black children in Maryland were not allowed to attend high school
until 1934. Once a black child finished the seventh grade that was more or
less it for his or her education. Very, very tragic.
