Hi Jayanand,
Good suggestion - I have dropped from the softish 2X extender to the 
sharpish 1.7X - so maybe I should have a 1.4X in my bag.
Certainly the internet suggests that the 1.4 is the sharpest extender. OTOH 
- for flying birds perhaps the reach of
the 80 - 400 by itself should be about enough. Thanks BTW for your tip about 
placing focusing with the focus
button - away from the shutter button. Obviously - as you can see (and 
already know) it works!

I think you might do better with the 1.4x and a spot of cropping, the
D800E has a host of pixels to spare...(-:
