Alicante is about 450 km from Madrid, and I wanted to have a father-and-son trip before he heads to California at the end of the month to begin his professional career (aka as Real Life where you have to worry about health insurance, car loans etc.). We had a wonderful time. Madrid is one of the world's great cities. The problem is that most visitors only see the tourist traps of Plaza Mayor and the surrounding areas. Fortunately, I know the city well by now and was able to show my son the REAL parts of Madrid.
