Thanks, Nathan, but the photo was taken by a flutist friend who wasn't
playing in the Brandenburg.

Jim, I use a seat strap. It's basically a belt that you sit on. It has a
hook on the end which attaches to the bottom of the bassoon.  It means
that I don't need a right-hand crutch to steady the instrument, which
frees the right hand a bit. The disadvantage is that you can't play
standing up.

I also use a "side strap" which you can see, it's black strap that goes
around the back support on the back of the chair, and hooks to the ring at
the top of the boot, where you would have fastened your neck strap.  The
side strap gives a second point of support and takes the weight of the
instrument off my left hand.

As an aviation guy, I'm sure you can relate to having to "strap in" before
taking off, so to speak  :-)
