I will try with some 14bit uncompressed, as said to Chris I can work with
500MB scans with no problem at all....

This probably has a lot to do with the actual file size vs available memory.
The larger files may exceed some physically limited threshold.
The issue of compression was important when sd memory was expensive and
limited, ditto on the hd storage size. I don't understand why anyone messes
with it now.
