Here's a statement from Italian Photohistorian, Michele Smargiassi, whom
I've contacted on another list. She's studied at the HCB Foundation in
Paris.

"As far as I know from a recent visit at the Fondation HCB in Paris,
there's no contact sheet left from HCB pre-war period, having himself cut
off and discarded every negative he did't find worth keeping. Actually,
HCB's own account for that image refers to a single intuitive, almost
uncontrolled shot."

Perhaps other members of that group will chime in later today.
