Personally, those rubber gripper things irritate my neck. Always have. Too
stiff, too thick.

I note 2 very different ideas in the discussion....... Comfort and staying
put.

Comfort... distribution of weight over the defined shoulder area ( thin
straps dig into the body and fall off more easily).. and more recently,
length.
Staying put.... the ability of the strap to stay on the shoulder (and the
ease to come off the shoulder when desired).

Can we widen the discussion to other types of straps.?

I have not seen anyone comment on the stretchy neoprene type straps.....????
even for heavy DSLR's.. where they are quite comfortable and stay put (but
look pretty cheesy to me.)

Those Nikon ( I suspect Canon has them too) web straps with the advertising
in bold 86 point type.... Mine says.. NIKON D1x..( yours probably says
something more current.) They too are comfortable for a heavy camera.
Cheesy squared.

I can not imagine using a silk strap for anything... it bites into the neck
and is naturally slippery.... ( ditto the old fashioned snake chain straps
of the early Leica/Contax days)

Leather seems not to have been mentioned.... those Artist and Artisan straps
for example....

Nylon woven strapping?

What else is out there?

FYI: My preference for Domke straps is based upon the thin strap width (1/2
inch widening to about an inch at the shoulder) and the grippers are part of
the strap itself... Strap is made of a cotton tape like product. Doesn't
bite into the neck, stays put, distributes weight nicely. YMMV
