Howard and Geoff,
The lions in Samburu live in wooded forests, unlike the open plains of Mara. 
So the males cannot impress the females or scare away other males with their 
manes anymore (since they cannot see them through the bushes). Also with big 
manes the hair keeps getting stuck to the thorny bushes. Hence over time, 
the lions in Samburu and Tsavo have lost their manes in the process of 
evolution.
