If you are only scanning photos, I'd say the Canon CanoScan LiDE110
is completely adequate for your purpose.

$54.99 at Newegg.com I have an earlier version of it, and have used
it for years, Small, easy to use, USB, portable.

The software is easy, or if you want to get fancier, you can drive it
with Vuescan. You can use it for a copier or a fax machine.

I also have a Microtek Scanmaker i900, a Scanmaker 9800XL and a
Nikon CoolScan 5000, in case you're thinking I'm some bumpkin from
Natchitoches, Louisiana. ;-)
