Note the rubble lying about and the lack of any guards or caretakers. Gawkers were free to wander about, pick up stones, carve initials into rocks, and otherwise show that they were there. Bad for the monument but far more satisfying to the tourists than the overly regimented controls imposed on most ancient sites these days. The pictures were taken with a very tired pre-WWII Leica IIIC with an uncoated lens.
