Thanks for the suggestion Herb, it was really the backlit leaf with
silhouette which I was concentrating on.

May I make a suggestion. On your first picture, the leftmost leaf is out of
focus; this was probably not intended. The small depth of field using a 90mm
lens surprised me at first, and the engraved DOF scale on the lens is
practically useless at short distances. 
Photographing flowers, I found that one petal would be sharp and another
fuzzy.

My PDA has a DOF application and I found that for close ups f/8 gave me a
few inches DOF, adequate to insure a sharp flower and still throwing the
background out of focus.
