Douglas:  Sorry to disappoint you, but I what you're seeing a a pair of
folding "opera glasses" (mini-binoculars).  The case is rectangular, and
opens like a wedge. When snapped shut, it's pocketable, and indeed about
the size of a large cell phone.

Now, where did I put that flux capacitor...?  :-)
