Peter,

That battery sounds like it is in really bad shape. Just replace it ASAP. No 
point in beating a dead horse. Given it is making that nice sound, I would 
remove it and just run your laptop on AC until you get a replacement. Not 
worth frying your Mac if the battery is shorting...
