I'd like to know what the red stuff is the cranberry sauce is sitting on?

My daughter decided to make two types of cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving.
The lighter bottom layer is chopped raw cranberries with sugar and a bit of
orange rind, the darker upper layer is normal cooked cranberry sauce. Both
were delicious.
