"Sir John is lost!" he said, "lost in the ice! His ship is crushed to
match-sticks by this time, they're all frozen." She knew he was telling the
truth, she'd seen the rescue ships returning, coming back into the harbor at
night, their crews, frostbitten and demoralized limping off, hiding in the
filthy bars and back alleys. No one would speak of Sir John Franklin -- not
any of the ones who'd returned. No doubt they lost their courage before the
ice got thick, turned around at the first narwal attack, the first snowball
thrown by an Esquimaux child. No, Sir John was lost and she new it. But she
smiled anyway.
