Hi Luggers,
On the way to the zoo and the aviary yesterday I used the Nikkor 300
f4.5 AIS IF on the D700 to take some general shots. Such a long
telephoto forces me to see pictures differently - especially since I
don't normally use such long glass.

Here is a memorial gate in the park dedicated to the loyal Chinese
that supported the British colony through two world wars. It occurred
to me that it would have had more meaning if the inscription was in
Chinese as well as English.

The tower on the Governor's mansion was added by the Japanese during
their occupation. They didn't think the original building was imposing
enough. The background to the tower is the Cheung Kong Center - owned
by Li Ka Shing - one of Asia's richest men.

Tucked away in a corner of the botanical gardens is this statue of
King George VI. He seems to be staring rather balefully at the
Japanese Tower on the Governor's residence.
I wonder if the statue was placed that way on purpose. I would add
that it is my opinion that Hong Kong tourism misses a big bet by not
emphasizing the unique colonial period.
IMHO Singapore does a much better job of that - to the immense benefit
of its tourist industry.
