I would suspect that you are putting more stress on the usb connector of 
your portable drive by leaving it plugged in.... than you would have by 
unplugging it and plugging it in each day....   
 
Any time something touches the cord...  or the drive's weight itself pushes 
on the cord in the case.....the cord connector will act as a lever..... 
prying the drives usb connector... left.... right... up... down.... and 
in....   It may happen more than you think.... or know..... while it is in 
the padded case....
