A few Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) breed in the Sierra Valley north of
Lake Tahoe:

Ordinarily the Sandhill Cranes' plumage is gray. The rust-colored stain is
from iron oxides in the soil. When the birds preen their feathers the iron
in the mud on their bills stains the plumage.

Also in the Sierra Valley, a Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus
xanthocephalus) claims turf:

techncial stuff (all photos): R8/DMR, 280mm f/4 APO+2x APO-Extender-R,
shoulder stock & monopod. All comments welcome.
