Subject: [Leica] potential focus issues

The Barkeep bought me a wonderful new lens for Christmas this year,
the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8. I've been playing with it in the intervening
time, although not as much as I would like to (I'm currently somewhat
busy dealing with wrapping up my thesis, and other scholarly
endeavors). However, when I do use it I seem to be having some trouble
getting my camera to focus properly (I'm using a Canon 30D). I'm not
entirely sure that it isn't in my head, but I don't think it is. Do
any of you knowledgeable folk have any advice for me about:

1. How to test the focusing mechanism in a way that will make it clear
whether the fault is the camera/lens combo, or if I'm doing something
wrong, or even just imagining it.

2. If it is the camera/lens combo, what might I do to fix it (or even
what is causing it).

thanks!
Elizabeth
