Cyclists also need to respect the laws of the road including and especially
stop signs and traffic signals.  We have no reason to expect respect from
motorists if we don't respect the laws we are subject to.  If the laws are
stupid and/or pointless let's change the laws!

I agree!  The current bicycle route system here in the Sacramento area is a
patchwork of leisurely lanes, abandoned and decrepit roads, and rutted &
ragged road shoulders littered with gravel, automotive debris and
unbreathable vehicle exhaust.  I must say however that Sacramento County
Parks have done a great job maintaining the bicycle trails along the
American River parkway.  Getting to & from the river bike trails is the
most dangerous part of the ride.
