There is a race held nearby most summers (cancelled this year because of
forest fires) that started as a 100-mile trail ride on horseback but when
one rider's horse was injured he finished the course on foot. The Western
States 100 was separated from the trail ride a couple years later after a
few people began running the course along with the horses. It's now a very
popular ultramarathon, with a silver belt buckle awarded to anyone who
finishes in less than 24 hours. See http://www.ws100.com/
