I almost bought a 14-24/2.8. But I talked myself out of it. My days of
operating heavy equipment are over, regardless of how good it might be.
Years of using the M system spoiled me.

Nikon D3 and 700 *need* best available lenses for getting all his 
potential. In fact the two zooms you quoted are among best alternatives.

I use, too, a Canon EOS 5D and yes their wide zoom ought to be improved 
although the version II of the 14mm and the 16-35mm are far better than 
previous one. But the 14-24mm f2.8 -huge and not comfortable- is 
probably  the best wide zoom i've seen in my life.
