You get a photo of the typical 'Loch Ness monster photo' quality. 
Possibly excellent bokeh.

You will almost never get a photo which shows off the truly superior 
of excellence of Leica optics; if you show this photo you took with 
the lens retracted and proclaim it to be the product of your superior 
Red Dot Leica $5000 camera, Leica will disown you and never sell you 
another product, at least until you can pay the full amount in cash 
and promise to remove the Red Dot.

That's why the manual has those admonitions. Ie, it won't hurt your 
camera or lens, just the photos.
