On one level I agree with you Richard - who cares?
On another level it's important to achieving the results one wishes  
to achieve, as well as where one wishes to compete in the market.
Was a time when if you had a good glass and decent film holder - you  
could find out what the films did quite inexpensively.
Discovering which chip/firmware/software will deliver according to  
one's desire can be a bit pricey.
