Besides the inherent differences due to size sensor as view factoe (x1 in the D3; x1.5 in the D300) there are some significant differences - weight and size: D3 is bigger and weightier and therefore more uncomfortable specially carrying a set of lenses - D300 has a incorporated flash that proves to be very usefull sometimes - D3 finder is better - noise is far better in D3 however D300 is among the best in APS sensor size cameras - D300 has got a cleaning sensor system that do work while cleaning D3 sensor *is* a true nightmare (IMHO) - body materials are too similar but I believe that D3 is a stronger camera than D300 - D3 is significantly quicker in every aspect Summarizing if you need a sturdy, speedy and pro camera and are used to sensor cleanig and don't mind a really weighty bag the D3 is your camera but if you are not worried about image quality above 1.600 ISO and do prefer a smaller camera choose the D300.
