I witnessed an appalling incident in which a high school superintendent over all of the "special" public high schools down here told us that he wanted to use 6 of our classrooms for each of his 4 years of students. I knew that we couldn't afford to give away 24 rooms, but my colleague, in apparent disbelief, said "HOW MANY CLASSES DO YOU NEED?!!" as sort of a rhetorical question. The superintendent had to write down on paper 6+6, take the sum of that, add 6 to it and take the sum, and then add a fourth 6 to it. He then replied "Twenty six". It was bad enough that he hadn't learned his multiplication tables, but when he couldn't add 6+6+6+6 and come up with the right sum, we knew things had reached a sorry state. -- Jeffery L.
