Subject: [Leica] Beautiful M8 - to code or not to code - that is the question.

Hi Vick,
Glad to have contributed to your decision to buy the M8. ;-).
About coding - I started with the wides - 21, 24, Tri (for the 28)
and 35 - because conventional wisdom was that the correction was
needed when using IR cut filters (the infamous magenta shift) and
then getting used to seeing the EXIF lens data on the wides I went on
to code the rest of the lenses, 50, two 90's and the non Leicas.

I like to see the EXIF data. I installed a John Millich adapter on my
Heliar 15 - coded it as a WATE - and installed a Leica 39mm IR cut
filter on it. I also took off the bayonet on my Nokton 40 SC and sent
it to John to have it milled. I have it coded so that my M8 reads the
lens as a 35 Lux Asph and I have a 43mm Heliopan IR cut filter on it.
Finally, I had John mill a type II CV adapter (obtained from Tom A.)
and installed it on my 75 CV Color Heliar coded as a 75 Summarit. I
use the 43 Heliopan IR cut filter from the 40mm on the 75mm. If my
experience is any indication you will start with coding on the wide
angles because they need it and end up doing the lot.
Cheers
Howard.
