If you have the code it will record the focal length in the EXIF data. Some flash functions are improved Dependant on which firmware version installed, the camera will apply additional vignetting correction and correction of cyan in the corners of the frame (when using the recommended IR filters). At least in the recent LFI magazines Leica is suggesting that the 6 bit coding should be used with lenses of 35mm or wider for the corrections listed above. This is only theory from studying available references. M8 owners will be able to tell you what they consider the practical importance of the coding to be.
