I wasn't aware of the Zappa song. And I'm a fan. 

Hopefully the herring will come back some day. The fish situation
throughout the world is declining, from what I hear.

Frank Zappa even wrote a song about the Grunion Run;^)

I remember the herring filling creeks that were little more than  
ditches. The water fairly swirled with them. That was years ago though.
