Subject: [Leica] DMR firmware?

I've always been curious to know how complicated it is to write firmware for
a camera. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'm sure it's closer to 10 (10 being
extremely complex).

It's so critical to the end results today. You may have a well engineered
product, but if the software/firmware is junk then the end result is junk.
OTOH, maybe with firmware you can mask a lot of hardware shortcomings.
Utopia is great hardware and great firmware.

Perhaps it's like designing a lens. You reach a point where you have to give
something up in order to get something. So it's a fine balance. If you cut
back on the low pass filter you'll have better sharpness, but also moir?
fun. Which is easier to manage with software? And how do you deal with the
fact that everyone's view of color is a little different. Wouldn't it be
easier to make a bw only camera. Why haven't we seen one yet?

The scary thing is that if firmware is out of alignment you can't just tweak
it with a wrench.

What I've heard is that Leica is working on 1.3 in-house.
